The Zamfara State Government has appealed to the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, MHWUN, to shelve its planned strike and return to dialogue.

State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Mohammed Maradun, made the call in a statement on Wednesday, stressing that the health and safety of citizens remain the administration’s top priority.

Maradun acknowledged the concerns raised by the union but urged its members to embrace negotiation in the interest of the public, particularly amid the ongoing cholera outbreak in the state.

She noted that the government recently implemented a salary increase as part of measures to motivate medical professionals, adding that the process of addressing remuneration for all health workers was still ongoing.

“It is disheartening that the union has chosen to embark on a strike at a time when our collective focus should be on containing the cholera outbreak,” she said.

The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to providing medical supplies, free drugs at the Infectious Disease Hospital, and water and sanitation services to affected communities.

She assured that the ministry remains open to dialogue with MHWUN and other unions to resolve outstanding issues.
