Amber stepped in to join this year’s Strictly after Dani Dyer injured herself in rehearsals, and along with her pro dance partner Nikita Kuzmin this week scored a perfect 40 from the judges.
But that that still landed her in the bottom two against Lewis Cope and his pro partner, Katya Jones, who were eventually eliminated from the competition.
Both Lewis and Amber had previous dance experience, but Amber received an unprecedented amount of backlash after the actor was sent packing.
Now Strictly bosses might be more reluctant to cast stars such as Amber or Lewis to protect them from trolls.
“For years, casting producers have always signed celebrities with mixed dance abilities. Of course, there’s no show if every contestant is a weak performer,” an unnamed source told Daily Mail.
“But in recent series, from to , and now Amber Davies, stars have been forced to endure a vicious backlash from viewers on social media over their extensive dance background.”
The sourced added: “It really adds to the stress and pressure for the competing celebrity, and it can be difficult for them to handle, on top of all the rehearsals.
“There’s now a conversation happening behind the scenes about rethinking whether trained dancers should compete, but it has left executives split.”
They went on to say that show bosses believed viewers watching at home were “mostly rooting” for dance amateurs to improve, “rather than a skilled dancer earning full marks from the judges.”
Following the large amount of trolling, Amber defended herself on social media.
“Guys, please.. it’s really is just a show. I wasn’t even supposed to be in the comp,” she said on Instagram.
“You have no idea what we put our mind and body through for this experience.
“I’m really just trying my best with the opportunity that came to me. To anyone who has left a NICE comment thank you.”
She added: “The meanies are out to play. Please be kind.”
This comes as Lewis spoke out about being ‘robbed’ after his exit.
Appearing on It Takes Two on Monday, Lewis admitted he was gutted to have narrowly missed out on the semi-final.
He said: “We’re just trying to focus on the positives, it’s been an amazing 11 weeks and of course it hurts and it will take a bit of time to get over.
“But I’m really proud of what we’ve done.”
