Former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to rise in defence of the country’s democracy, warning against moves towards a one-party system.

In a post shared on his official X handle on Wednesday, Obi, who is now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said members of the party and other pro-democracy Nigerians were united in opposing any attempt to weaken the nation’s multi-party structure.

He emphasised the need to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic system, urging citizens who value unity, peace, and national security to take a stand.

Obi cautioned that any effort to erode political plurality would harm the country’s democratic growth and stability.

Part of his statement read: “We, members and leaders of the ADC, alongside other well-meaning Nigerians and lovers of democracy, insist that our democracy must not be undermined.

“We reject any move towards a one-party system and call on all Nigerians who believe in unity, peace, and security to join us in defending our democracy.”
