The Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, has refuted claims that the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, intends to target Catholic priests following his re-election.

A report circulating among certain bloggers suggested that Soludo informed his supporters that Catholic priests were no better than native doctors, whom he had begun to pursue, and that he would also go after them after his re-election.

However, in a press statement, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, urged the public to disregard the story, labeling it as false and misleading.

He stated: “The Anambra State Government has been made aware of a fabricated story circulating in various media outlets, claiming that Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, plans to arrest and imprison Catholic bishops and priests after his re-election.

“We categorically assert that this report is completely false, unfounded, and malicious. This fabrication serves as a clear example of misinformation and fake news aimed at creating discord and undermining the peaceful environment in our state.

“Evidently, this is the work of shadow opposition groups who have resorted to propaganda due to a lack of substantial campaign material; they are encouraged to focus on their dwindling campaigns.”

Mefor emphasized that the state government is committed to combating fake news and will continue to do so.

“We assure the public, particularly the Catholic Church, of which Soludo is a devoted member, and its leaders, that Governor Soludo harbors no such plans or intentions.

“The government respects the rights and freedoms of all citizens, including those of religious leaders.

“We urge the people of Anambra to dismiss this false report and to always seek verifiable evidence before accepting or sharing such inflammatory narratives. We remain dedicated to the ongoing fight against fake native doctors, fake Ndi Eze Nwanyi, and fake clergymen and women, which has led to ‘Oso Soludo,’ and this effort must be maintained.”
