A public affairs commentator, Mahdi Shehu, has criticised government officials who fall asleep at public events, describing the act as a sign of weak leadership and poor commitment to duty.

In a post shared on X on Tuesday, Shehu said sleeping in public is more than embarrassing; it is dangerous when the person involved holds a key public office.

According to him, “To sleep is natural, but to sleep in public is embarrassing. It becomes a scandal if the person sleeping is a governor, a minister, a president, or a security chief.”

He listed several messages he believes such behaviour sends to citizens.

“It shows he is not prepared for leadership. It also means he is unreliable, especially in times of crisis,” he wrote.

Shehu added that any official who sleeps openly during national functions or important meetings is incompetent and makes citizens feel abandoned.

“Rely on him at your own peril. You are on your own. To your tents, oh Nigerians,”he said.

Shehu’s post was accompanied by a picture of President Tinubu together with security and government stakeholders.
