The newly elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Taminu Turaki, has urged United States President Donald Trump to intervene and safeguard democracy in Nigeria.

Turaki made this appeal while speaking to journalists at the PDP headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

This situation arose amidst rising tensions at the party headquarters due to attempts by conflicting factions to conduct parallel meetings.

According to DAILY POST, the faction led by Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, clashed with Turaki’s faction at the party secretariat.

The newly elected National Working Committee (NWC) from the convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, and the faction supported by Wike had scheduled separate meetings for Tuesday.

However, a confrontation occurred at the PDP secretariat, resulting in the Wike faction reportedly being expelled from the premises.

In his address to journalists, Turaki accused a certain minister, believed to be Wike, of inciting violence with the active support and complicity of the police at the party secretariat.

He stated: “I want to call on President Trump. What is at stake is not merely genocide against Nigerian Christians; he should come and rescue democracy in Nigeria – democracy is under threat.

“I am appealing to all other developed nations and advanced democracies to come and assist Nigeria. Come and preserve democracy.

“It is incomprehensible that a certain Minister of the Republic of Nigeria would lead thugs with the active support and complicity of the police to instigate chaos here.

“I have stated that we are prepared to lay down our lives to defend our office, protect our democracy, and uphold our mandate.

“So, Nigerians, you are witnessing what is unfolding. International community, you are observing the threats to Nigerian democracy. Come and help us. Come and save us.”
