TOM Burgess has backed brother Sam to become England’s next rugby league coach, a very different job than guiding a club.

Former national chief Wayne Bennett, who guided the nation to 2017’s World Cup final, backed the Warrington boss – with prop icon James Graham assisting – as the man to lead the nation into this year’s tournament.

And Huddersfield prop Burgess, who still hopes to be part of the squad, believes his older sibling has what it takes to replace Shaun Wane.

He said: “Obviously, he’s my brother, so I’m going to get behind him. But I know what Sam brings to a team.

“As a player, he was pretty much a coach as well and England is a role where you have to inspire the players.

“I know Sam and Jammer would definitely bring that as well and I’m not sure how many other Aussie or Kiwi coaches or whatever would do well in the England job.

“I’d love to see Sam get the gig. Even though Willie Peters and Adrian Lam have done well with their respective teams, it’s a totally different ball game with international rugby league.

“It’s not like you’re going through a season. It’s a totally different kettle of fish.

“Sam’s coaching career may still be young, but he’s not young in that sort of arena. He’s been around that for a long time and he’s destined for great things.

“He’s very motivated as a person, as a player he was. He’s motivated as a coach too, so he’s definitely got those ambitions. I’d back him all the way.

“Nine years ago, he was England’s captain in the World Cup final. Nine years later, it’d be pretty cool if he was head coach.”

Burgess is looking to play his way back into the England side after missing out on the Ashes squad.

And the 33-year-old knows there is only one way to do that, by doing the business for Huddersfield.

He added: “I’ve never retired from playing for England, but last year was the first year I wasn’t involved.

“I’m not under any illusion. You pick on form and I didn’t have the best year with the Giants. There were no qualms there.

“For me, it’s always been the pinnacle.”
