Human rights advocate and co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls Movement, Aisha Yesufu, has criticized the National Assembly for its “failure to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.”
In a public letter directed to the National Assembly, Yesufu expressed that the federal lawmakers have neglected to tackle the urgent issues of insecurity, poverty, and corruption that afflict the nation.
She stated that as the foremost legislative body in government, the National Assembly should represent the people's voice, yet it has allegedly transformed into a rubber-stamp assembly, complicit in the country’s decline into disorder.
Yesufu asserted that every member of the National Assembly should feel ashamed, emphasizing that they have collectively failed the Nigerian populace they are meant to represent.
She urged the National Assembly to investigate the root causes of insecurity and the inadequacies of security agencies in safeguarding the citizens of the nation, and to hold the executive branch accountable for its inability to protect the populace.
“The legislative branch of government is the foundation of democracy. It typically signifies that a democracy is well-established in a country. The legislative branch creates laws, exercises oversight, confirms appointments, ratifies treaties, and most importantly, holds the executive accountable.
“The legislature should act as the advocate within the government, the voice for those without one. Every member of the National Assembly was elected by the people to be a voice empowered by constitutional authority.
“A voice that will advocate when people are in urgent need. The significance of the role the National Assembly plays in amplifying the voices of the citizens is evident in the protection afforded to the lawmakers' voices, as whatever they express on the floor of their respective chambers is never held against them,” she remarked.
