The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, has postponed the local government elections in the state to August 30, 2025.
This was announced by the state Electoral Chairman, Dr. Michael Ekpali Odey, while delivering his open address at the unveiling of the revised timetable for the Rivers State LG election on Monday.
DAILY POST recalls that the local government elections were initially scheduled to hold on August 9, 2025, under the leadership of the former RSIEC Chairman, Retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, before he and other members of the commission board were dissolved.
Their dissolution was directed by the Sole Administrator of the state, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, following his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State.
As part of the emergency measures, President Tinubu also suspended the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Present at the meeting are, leaders of all registered political parties, traditional rulers, security agencies, religious bodies, the media, professional associations, civil society groups, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, and members of the electorate.
