ROY KEANE believes that Newcastle manager Eddie Howe should take over for Ruben Amorim at Manchester United, as he would bring “calmness” to Old Trafford.

United is still in search of a new manager following recent tensions with the board.

Amorim’s disappointing tenure lasted only 14 months before he departed from his position.

Currently, the team is being led on an interim basis, but former United manager is the favorite to take over as caretaker until the summer.

The United legend shared his thoughts on the situation, expressing that while Solskjaer would “do well,” he shouldn’t be considered a long-term solution.

He told Sky Sports: “You could propose 20 names, and I would still have the same opinion. Regardless of who takes over, I wish them success.

“Is it the right choice? I’m not sure. If it’s just until the season’s end, I believe Ole would manage fine.

“But do I envision Ole as the manager for the next four or five years, restoring United to competitiveness? Probably not.”

When asked whom he would appoint, he mentioned Howe, stating that he would provide stability during this challenging period for the club.

Keane elaborated: “I would choose him. I admire him. I appreciate his management style. His teams play attractive football when they are performing well.

Eddie Howe's Career So Far

Bournemouth (2008-2011, 2012-2020)

Win rate: 50%

Honors: Three promotions in seven years

Burnley (2011-2012)

Win rate: 39%

Newcastle (2021-present)

Win rate: 50%

Honors: Carabao Cup 2024-25, qualified for Champions League twice

“I understand he’s not everyone's favorite, and he has his critics, but I appreciate what he has achieved at Newcastle and Bournemouth. He has managed between 700 to 800 games and is still relatively young.

“I admire his calm demeanor; I think Manchester United could benefit from that.

“We’ve witnessed the previous manager’s emotional approach – I appreciate emotional leaders, as I tend to be quite emotional myself.

“However, I believe his calmness, alongside his achievements at Newcastle, including winning the (League) Cup, would make him a great fit.”

Newcastle has had a mixed start to the season but currently sits in sixth place, just three points shy of fourth.

Howe led the Magpies to a fifth-place finish last season, which secured their spot in this season’s Champions League.

Other managers linked to the position include Ruud van Nistelrooy and Oliver Glasner.

At present, Solskjaer and former United midfielder and coach are the leading candidates to take charge until season’s end.

One of them will succeed Fletcher, despite initial hopes that they could collaborate.

United drew 2-2 with Burnley in Fletcher’s first match as caretaker on Wednesday night, and he will also oversee the team in their upcoming clash with Brighton on Sunday.
