The Rivers State Government has announced that it will soon finalize arrangements to enroll its workforce in the Employees’ Compensation Scheme of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF).

The Secretary to the State Government, Benibo Anabraba, made this announcement on Thursday while welcoming a delegation of Executive Members from the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Rivers State Council, during a courtesy visit to his office.

Anabraba mentioned that the state government is thoroughly reviewing the policies governing the scheme, which, once approved by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, will ensure medical care and rehabilitation for employees who become ill or sustain injuries while performing their duties. In the event of fatal accidents, it will also provide compensation to their dependents.

In a statement from the Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Juliana Masi, the SSG highlighted Governor Fubara’s commitment to ensuring that Rivers State adopts the scheme.

The statement read: “We have met with the management of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund and are intentional about launching the scheme in Rivers State.

“The welfare of workers remains a top priority for this administration, and we will implement this scheme to ensure that workers who are injured or involved in accidents while on duty receive care and support, thereby instilling a sense of security in their service.”

He added that the state will also collaborate with the private sector, particularly those in the construction industry, mandating NSITF certification as part of their operational requirements to safeguard workers and promote their well-being on the job.

Anabraba also expressed concern regarding the indiscriminate parking of trucks along major roads in the state, labeling it a threat to public safety and a source of environmental hazards.

He urged the TUC to engage and educate its affiliates, including the Association of Shipping, Clearing and Forwarding Agencies, the Union of Tipper and Quarry Employers, and the Road Transport Employers Association, about the dangers of such practices.

He emphasized the importance of adhering to state traffic laws, warning that the government may be forced to take decisive action if these violations continue.
