Sheffield FC’s men’s team competes in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, after being relegated last season.

But things appear to be on the up, with McClure arriving with big ambitions for the club on and off the pitch.

He explained to Sports: “There’s a bunch of us who have a company called IAV, and we came together to purchase a chunk of the club.

“We gave a vision to the majority shareholder of where we’d like to take it, and he was excited by what we had to suggest.

“I’m obviously going into my , 1980s era – so yeah it’s going to be fun.”

Reverend and the Makers found fame with their 2007 hit ‘Heavyweight Champion of the World.’

The tune boasts almost 42 million streams on , and the band still pulls in 210,000 monthly listeners on the platform.

But now McClure has turned his attention from festival crowds to fans.

Formed in 1857, Sheffield FC is believed to be the oldest football club in the world, a title that gives it appeal despite being dwarfed by its two neighbour clubs.

He continued: “There’s a great opportunity to develop a community of people, a lot of whom are disenfranchised with football.

“I don’t want to challenge or , I am a Wednesday fan, but there is an opportunity to be everyone’s second club, not just in Sheffield but nationally and around the globe.

He also set out some targets outside of the men’s team’s progression.

He highlighted an opportunity to snag a large new fanbase by investing in the women’s team.

And he also set out plans to return to the club’s former home closer to the city centre, which he revealed has suffered an unusual fate in the years since their departure.

“On the side there’s less of a precedent for that in the city so the opportunities to grow the women’s team are vast.

“The team currently play just beyond city limits, so we have an ambition to return them to where it all began, which is currently a B&Q car park actually.”
