ANYONE who has renovated a house will know just how ridiculously expensive it can be.
So when one savvy woman named Kelly Whiteside was quoted a whopping £19,000 by professionals to transform her bathroom, she decided to do it herself – with a £20 budget.

And the key to the impressive ? A £1 roll of sticky masking tape.
People have since flooded the DIY whizz with praise, with people branding the transformation “impressive” and noting how it’s taken on a whole new “luxurious” look.
Taking to ( @kellyewhiteside ), Kelly posted a video where she explains: “I transformed the toilet room for less than £20 after being quoted over £19,000 to completely re-do this room, knock down the wall and make it a luxurious bathroom.
“We only budgeted £5,000 for the whole reno – what were we thinking?”
Kelly went on to say how she decided against knocking any walls down and that after getting to a certain point of buying £14-worth of tile paint in a bid to transform the room, she still thought something was “missing.”
“I needed something a bit more,” she says.
“So three months later I’m back in the toilet room with a roll of £1 masking tape and some leftover paint.”
Kelly can then be seen getting to work and places the sticky tape on the wall in vertical stripes, ensuring there’s even spacing inbetween.
Then, she rollers over the sticky tape with white paint before ripping it off to show a subtle but transformative neutral stripe to her newly decorated bathroom.
“I’ve seen loads of people doing this effect but I’ve never fully appreciated how long it takes,” she admits.
“This took hours to line each individual piece up so they’re straight and secure, but thankfully because it’s such a small space the painting took minutes.”
Four cheap home renovation tricks
YOU don't have to spend loads to give a room a new look. Here are five other home renovation tricks you can try.
Kitchen cupboards
One way to give your kitchen a complete transformation for less is to change the look of the kitchen cupboards. There are loads of different vinyl coverings out there to choose from, and it’s a quick and easy way to update your home.
Handles
Another thing you can try that won’t break the bank is to change up the handles. You can pick up relatively cheap handles in DIY stores, or even in the charity shop. Adding new ones to your kitchen cupboards, or doors in your house, can be extremely effective.
Leftovers
Most of us have old half-used tins of paint in the garage, but they’re often forgotten about. However, there may be enough in the pot to paint a feature wall in another room, and you won’t have to spend a penny.
Freebies
It’s worth checking your local Facebook Marketplace, or Freecycle, to see what other people are getting rid of. As they say, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. And if someone’s planning to revamp a room, they might want to get rid of a sofa, or a coffee table, which you could use to give a lounge a new look.
Kelly goes on to say that because she bought the one-coat paint, it gave her the exact coverage she needed.
She captioned the post: “Part 3 of my toilet room fun! Who knew you could spend so long in the toilet!
“FYI wet masking tape is becomes stickier and grabbier than a pair of toddlers hands. Handle with caution and wear painting clothes!”
The post has since gone viral, racking up a whopping 138k views and several comments from very impressed DIY fans up and down the country.
“Very impressive! Looks luxurious now,” praised one person.
A second commented: “Love this!”
A third noted how it “looks beautiful,” while others called it “absolutely gorgeous” and “brilliant.'”
“So impressive!!!” complimented another, while a further added: “That’s actually really lovely.”
One more chimed in: “Honestly a great job,” followed by a clapping hands emoji.
