Numerous Nigerian youths, organized under the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), gathered on Thursday in Abuja to demonstrate at the headquarters of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in response to the Commission’s recent decision to deregister the council.
The protest, led by NYCN President Ambassador Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, signified the start of a 30-day nationwide demonstration aimed at compelling the CAC to overturn its decision and to remove the Registrar-General, Hussaini Ishaq Magaji, SAN.
The demonstrators accused Magaji of contempt of court, claiming that the deregistration was executed despite an ongoing legal dispute.
This agitation followed the Federal Ministry of Youth's confirmation that the CAC had revoked the NYCN’s registration certificate and appointed a caretaker committee to manage its operations, while the matter is still pending before the Court of Appeal.
Holding placards with slogans such as “Registrar-General Must Go,” “Respect Court Orders,” and “Deregistration of NYCN is a Security Concern,” the protesters obstructed the main entrance to the CAC headquarters, singing solidarity songs and demanding justice.
Speaking to journalists on-site, Sukubo characterized the deregistration as a violation of the rule of law.
“This issue has already been ruled on by the Federal High Court and is currently pending before the Court of Appeal. We maintain that all legal processes must be adhered to before any administrative decision is enacted,” he stated.
He further emphasized that the youth would persist in their efforts until the council’s status is reinstated.
“We will continue our peaceful protests for 30 days nationwide until NYCN is restored. We also call on relevant authorities to intervene, as this matter impacts the voice and unity of Nigerian youth,” Sukubo asserted.
In his comments, NYCN National Secretary Comrade Gara Nongha expressed that the CAC’s decision was “extremely concerning” and called for its immediate reversal.
“The NYCN is the legitimate umbrella organization representing millions of Nigerian youths. We demand that its full registration rights be reinstated without delay,” he declared.
Additionally, former NYCN Secretary-General Barrister Abubakar Suleiman emphasized that the issue is already before the court and must be addressed appropriately.
“The Federal High Court has already issued directives on this matter. Any further actions must be in accordance with the ongoing court proceedings,” he stated.
In response to the protesters, Acting Registrar-General and CAC Director of Customer Service Julius Hanga clarified that the deregistration was merely temporary and intended to resolve outstanding issues.
He assured that the Commission was reviewing the situation and that the NYCN’s registration status would be restored once all legal and administrative matters were resolved.
