EMOTIONAL escape artist Steve Cotterill has saved his latest club from relegation.

The former Wimbledon, Brighton and Bournemouth striker officially kept his hometown club Cheltenham Town in the EFL after a 4-0 hammering of Walsall.

The experienced manager got emotional in his post-match interview.

With tears in his eyes he said: “My God I can’t tell you how much that means to me, my family and everybody in Cheltenham, it means everything.”

at the club in late September last year – with the club in a concerning lowly position in .

He made an immediate impact, leading the Robins to ten points from his first four matches.

Cotterill joined after being sacked by local rivals Forest Green Rovers following failure to gain promotion back to the EFL.

And Cheltenham’s safety was confirmed after they thumped Walsall 4-0.

It also meant that the Gloucestershire club did the double over Walsall this season – they beat them in October while the Saddlers were top of the division.

It led to Cotterill earning League Two Manager of the Month for October

In his first spell with Cheltenham, Cotterill led the club from step two of non-league to the EFL.

The Robins were promoted to the then-Division Three in 1999 before being promoted again under Cotterill in 2002.

The legend of the club then moved on to manage .

Before returning to Cheltenham at the age of 61 Cotterill also managed , Notts County, , , Bristol City, Birmingham City, Shrewsbury Town and Forest Green Rovers.

He also had a successful playing career – starting out at Cheltenham Town.

Spanning from 1986-1996, it included spells at Burton Albion, Wimbledon, Brighton and Bournemouth.
