THE Premier League will suggest a punishment for Man City in the next few weeks after the Etihad club’s bombshell guilty verdict.
City were by the Prem over breaches of their financial rules.
The club are being tipped to face severe sanctions, with some claiming they could be given a huge points deduction or even EXPULSION from the league.
City’s future remains uncertain until the punishments are handed out but they could soon gain some clarity.
Sanctions will be decided by a three-man commission at a hearing “in the next few weeks”, according to the Times .
And it says Prem chiefs will make “submissions” about the punishments it thinks City should receive.
It adds officials will face a “dilemma” as it will be under pressure to make an example of City.
However, it will also be wary of recommending a harsh punishment that will effectively lead to relegate and remove top stars like from the league.
City are highly likely to appeal against the punishment when it eventually arrives.
But the report adds that the Premier League should push for a punishment so hefty that relegation to the is “all but guaranteed”.
That’s after they suggested a 12-point deduction for for a single breach of its PSR rules in November 2023.
The Toffees were later docked ten points before it was reduced to six on appeal.
There is also the prospect of City facing a lengthy transfer ban and a big fine – in addition to points deductions.
City were charged by the Premier League following an investigation into alleged breaches between 2009 and 2018.
The investigation began after German newspaper Der Spiegel published leaked financial documents from City in November 2018.
A City spokesperson told The Athletic: “The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality.
“As such FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023.
“The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”
Club chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak later insisted the club were innocent in a letter to fans.
He said: “There are so many things that I would like to be able to share with you to help you understand why we feel so confident in our position.
“But the strict confidentiality of the legal process and our determination to respect it means I cannot do that at the moment.”
