Two popular routes on European night train to be AXED after just two years

TWO night train journeys connecting European cities to Paris have been scrapped due to lack of funding.

The Austrian rail provider ÖBB revealed that both routes will come to a stop later this year.

The Nightjet sleeper train connecting to and to Vienna will stop from December 2025.

The rail operator ÖBB said that the scrapping of the services is due to financial support being pulled from the French government.

In a statement, ÖBB said: “The French railway company SNCF Voyageurs has been informed by the Ministry of in Paris that the government service contracts for the Vienna-Paris and Berlin-Paris night trains will be discontinued for 2026.

“Night trains can currently only be operated with the participation of international partners.

“ÖBB regrets that, following the withdrawal of the French partners, both night train connections will no longer be offered as of December 14, 2025.”

The Nightjet sleeper train connecting Paris and Berlin started on December 11, 2023, after a nine-year hiatus.

Meanwhile, the route connecting Paris to Vienna was launched in December 2021.

These aren’t the first routes to be axed this year either, the Nightjet sleeper train service between Berlin and Brussels stopped in March 2025 after running for just over a year.

The – it was first launched in December 2023 and ran three times a week.

ÖBB is largest provider of sleeper trains in Europe and it has become a popular alternative to flying.

While the routes to and from have been axed, Nightjet still operates around 25 European cities.

Some of the most popular routes include Vienna to and to Zurich.

Passengers travelling on the Nightjet can either book the seat car which is the most affordable way to travel.

Or of course, there are the sleeper cars which are what Nightjet describes as having ‘maximum cosiness’.

The compartments up to three people and have their own shower and toilet.

They also come with towels and toiletries like soap, slippers and earplugs.

The bed is fully made bed with a blanket, sheets and pillow, in the morning, passengers can enjoy an à la carte menu with hot drinks.

Another option is the couchette which is ideal for families – and is a little cheaper than the sleeper car.

Passengers can travel in a compartment that sleeps up to six people.

For those travelling alone, there’s the mini cabin which is small but offers privacy throughout the journey.

Travelling on Nightjet can cost as little as €29,90 (£26.11).
