Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State stated that sycophants surrounded the late former President Muhammadu Buhari during his tenure.
The governor made this remark on Saturday at the 2nd Raymond Dokpesi Diamond Lecture organized by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations in Abuja.
According to Sule, he witnessed firsthand how politicians flattered Buhari while he was in office, only to distance themselves from him after he left power.
“As a governor, I have observed the impact of sycophancy. I have seen people actually sit in the presence of President (Muhammadu) Buhari and tell him, ‘Oh, you are the best ever. No one can do this better.’
“However, the moment Buhari left office, they began to say, ‘Oh, he was one of the worst presidents we have ever seen.’
“These are the same individuals but in different circumstances. That is the essence of sycophancy,” Sule remarked.
Governor Sule also expressed his admiration for the late media mogul, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, for his bravery in establishing the country’s first private radio and television stations during the military era.
He noted that it was a time when almost everything was under government control.
“We are here to honor an icon of the media. Dokpesi was not afraid to speak truth to power, even in challenging times,” he added.
