Police warn against ‘Kidan Gangi’ displays in Kano

Published on June 18, 2025 at 07:26 AM

Kano State Police Command has issued a strong warning against the public display of weapons under the guise of traditional performances such as Kidan Gangi.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, cautioned residents against using cultural practices to perpetrate violence or intimidate the public.

He specifically referenced Kidan Gangi, a traditional dance that, in some cases, has been used to justify the open exhibition of dangerous weapons.

CP Bakori also decried the rising trend of youths showcasing weapons and gang-related behaviour on social media platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).

He said such acts not only glamorise violence but also encourage criminal behaviour among impressionable young people.

He warned that anyone found brandishing weapons, inciting violence, or concealing arms at home would be arrested and prosecuted.

“Parents and guardians must monitor their children’s activities closely and report any suspicious behaviour to the authorities,”; he added.

The police also warned blacksmiths against fabricating weapons for such purposes, stressing that anyone found aiding or abetting such activities would be investigated and brought to justice.

DAILY POST earlier reported that the Kano State Police Command arrested 51 suspects and recovered dangerous weapons and illicit drugs during a three-day operation conducted between June 13 and 15.
