The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Damagum, has urged party leaders and members to prepare for the crucial task of rescuing Nigeria.
Damagum delivered this message in Abuja on Wednesday at the Bauchi Governor’s Lodge.
There had been uncertainty surrounding the Ibadan national convention following last week’s ruling by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which prohibited the PDP from proceeding with the convention.
Justice Omotosho stated that the party had not adhered to its own regulations, pointing out that the notification for the Ibadan convention was not properly signed by the appropriate party officials as required by the PDP Constitution.
Omotosho’s ruling was welcomed by several party leaders, including the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike.
However, the party received favorable news on Tuesday when the Oyo State High Court, led by Justice Ladiran Akintola, permitted the PDP to continue with the convention and instructed the Independent National Electoral Commission to oversee the event.
While speaking at the Board of Trustees meeting in Abuja, Damagum reflected on the difficult circumstances he encountered when he took over leadership of the party in an acting capacity and encouraged members to unite in preparation for the convention.
“We do not need to be in power to commence our mission of rescuing, redirecting, and rebuilding this nation. This mission starts here, in opposition. You must stay dedicated to the principles of our party,” he stated.
He praised Justice Akintola for his courageous decision, which has now cleared the way for the party to hold its convention.
