Former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, has accused governors elected under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of obstructing his bid to run for the party's national chairmanship.

In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Lamido stated that the governors denied him a nomination form and disregarded a court ruling that mandated the party to permit him to participate in the contest.

He revealed that the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and the governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, personally reached out to him, urging him to withdraw from the race because the governors felt he would be too independent if elected as chairman.

Lamido recounted, “Bala, the governor of Bauchi, called and said, ‘My elder brother, you are stronger than us. If we make you chairman, we can’t influence you.’”

In response, he reminded the governor of the party’s rich history.

“I told him, ‘When PDP was established, you were not part of it. A party with a legacy should not be dominated by a single individual,’” he added.

Lamido clarified that despite obtaining a court order requiring the PDP to allow him to enter the race, the governors continued to defy it and subsequently filed an appeal.

He also dismissed the leadership that emerged from the recent convention, which appointed Tanimu Turaki as national chairman.

He characterized the entire process as unacceptable.

“That convention is null and void,” he asserted.

The former governor called on senior stakeholders, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, to step in and assist in reorganizing the PDP.

He emphasized that the party needed to return to its foundational principles to enhance Nigeria’s democracy and development.
