The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) asserts that its success in elections relies on eligible voters rather than influential figures.
The Chairman of PDP in Ondo State, Mr. Modupe Aisida, made this statement on Thursday in Akure.
Aisida noted that although several members, including governors, are defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the PDP's strength lies with the electorate.
“Consider what occurred in Lagos. Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu both faced defeat in Lagos State during the 2023 presidential election.
“Many were taken aback because it was unexpected. Tinubu also lost in Osun State, his home state, during the presidential election. This illustrates the power of the people.
“This is why we must stop relying on strongmen. Whether you’re a governor or not, building robust institutions allows people to exercise their right to vote and express their choices openly.
“In my view, power belongs to the people. I’m not concerned about those who have left the party.
“They benefited from the party’s support, and we worked hard for them, but we have moved on, both nationally and locally. This shift is beneficial for the system.
“Let’s observe how those who defected fare in the next election. If we hold free and fair elections, we will see how strong and popular they truly are.
“It’s fundamentally about the people, and that’s the reality. The current situation indicates that we should not depend on strong individuals within the party but rather on the ordinary citizens out there,” he stated.
He challenged the reasoning behind the migration of numerous politicians to the ruling APC, suggesting that many left due to personal interests.
According to him, it is crucial to educate and enlighten the public about their electoral power so they refrain from selling their votes during elections.
The PDP chairman addressed the potential candidacy of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 presidential election, stating that as a democratic party, PDP would allow every aspirant the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights.
“If former President Goodluck Jonathan chooses to run, that would be positive; however, the reality is that we are democrats. There will be primaries, and we will not hinder anyone interested in running. Everyone will have the opportunity to assert their democratic rights,” he said.
Aisida also mentioned that the party has rectified the mistakes made leading up to the 2023 presidential election by designating the 2027 presidency to the southern region of the country.
He denied any existence of factions or divisions within the party at both state and national levels.
