PARAGUAY has announced a NATIONAL HOLIDAY after their shock World Cup triumph over Germany.

The South American underdogs via a dramatic penalty shootout on Monday.

headed in front in the 42nd minute before equalised after the break.

Paraguay only had 25 per cent of the ball but held firm for 120 minutes.

And there were emotional celebrations when Jose Canale netted the winning spot-kick after Havertz, and Jonathan Tah missed from 12 yards.

Soon after the game, the Paraguayan government announced a nationwide holiday.

It came into effect on Tuesday morning and will last the whole day, allowing the euphoric celebrations to continue.

Part of the statement issued by president Santiago Pena read: “This measure seeks to allow all compatriots to celebrate together this important sporting achievement that makes the whole country proud.”

Paraguay have reached the last 16 of the World Cup four times previously and recorded their best-ever result in 2010 by making the quarter-finals.

But beating , and inflicting their first World Cup shootout defeat, marks one of the greatest results in their history.

Manager Gustavo Alfaro, who hails from neighbouring Argentina, called on the nation’s people to savour the moment.

He said: “I want all of Paraguay to enjoy this.

“We may have our defects, but we have a heart that never gives up, and that is what keeps us alive.”

Paraguayans will keep a close eye on the ding-dong between and tonight as they face the winner in the last 16.
