In videos caught by eyewitnesses, a parachuter was seen floating above the ground with an American flag attached to his feet.
In a heart-stopping moment he suddenly dropped quickly from the sky over Tech’s home football arena – Lane Stadium – before slamming into the massive scoreboard below.
The daredevil then became tangled and stuck on the screen, leaving him helplessly dangling above spectators seated in the stands.
Swinging in the wind, the ropes the pair were tangled in were the only things stopping him from plummeting to his death.
The jumper’s parachute appeared to get stuck between the letters “C” and “H” — ripping off the covering and exposing the lights beneath.
The man remained stuck to the parachute harness for some time, before emergency services arrived to help him down.
Firefighters arrived 45 minutes later and were lifted up to assist the man into a cherry-picker, according to On3.
They carefully worked to free him from the harness before helping him into the machine’s basket.
The man was safely returned to the ground following the terrifying ordeal.
The shocking accident left the crowd stunned and delayed the school’s game on Saturday afternoon.
The man had been part of a duo, but the other parachuter had flown over the screen and safely landed a short distance away.
Kick-off went ahead an hour later than scheduled, with the game starting shortly after 4 p.m.
In a statement posted to X, Virginia Tech Athletics said: “We are grateful to report the skydiver was safely secured and is currently stable”.
“Our primary focus remains on their well-being.
“We extend our sincere appreciation to the first responders, event staff, and medical personnel for their swift, coordinated and professional response,” the statement finished.
The Virginia Tech Department told The New York Post that the incident had been “resolved”.
The cops said they did not believe the parachuter required hospital treatment.
