The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has expressed its support for the ongoing reforms in the oil and gas sector, particularly within its regulatory frameworks.
PANDEF stated that it is excited about the recent developments, which it believes will significantly enhance the sector's position.
During a press conference in Abuja on Friday, PANDEF's chairman, Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali, remarked that the reforms that have resulted in the appointment of one of Nigeria’s most capable professionals in the oil and gas sector, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, as the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), demonstrate President Tinubu’s commitment to advancing the sector into the future.
PANDEF, the leading socio-cultural organization representing host communities in the Niger Delta, pledged to mobilize the local population to collaborate with both federal and state governments in fostering a conducive environment for the oil and gas sector to flourish.
Igali stated: “PANDEF reaffirms its commitment to closely work with federal and state governments in mobilizing our people to ensure that an appropriate enabling environment exists for this vital sector to continue fulfilling its important role.
“We, the citizens of the Niger Delta, are highly encouraged by these changes and hope that the comprehensive reforms will be maintained.
“This is the only way to guarantee that the oil and gas industry continues to play its crucial role for the collective economic interest of all Nigerians and positions Nigeria as a key player in the global energy landscape.
“We commend President Bola Tinubu for appointing Mrs. Eyesan, a distinguished economist, as Executive Vice President of Upstream at the NNPC, as well as Engr. Saidu Aliyu Mohammed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Regulatory Authority.”
PANDEF, which was previously led by the late elder statesman Edwin Clark, urged the Federal Government to implement an environmental remediation program to maintain peace in the region.
“The Federal Government must go beyond the Ogoni clean-up and ensure that there are annual budgetary provisions for the sustained cleanup of the damaged environments in the Niger Delta,” he added.
