The terrifying incident unfolded on Monday at the annual Maharaj No Melo fair in Madhya Pradesh’s Jhabua district in central India.
The dragon-shaped Colombus Swing suddenly gave way halfway through a cycle and slammed into a nearby wall, sparking chaos at the overcrowded fairground.
Some children were flung from the ride onto the ground below, while others were left dangling in the air, still trapped in and unable to escape.
Shocking footage showed horrified parents and crowds sprinting towards the wreckage.
Injured children lay sprawled across the fairground, crying and screaming in pain and shock.
Eyewitnesses said the ride was still operational when it suddenly came loose and tipped over without warning.
Of the 14 children injured, two young girls suffered serious injuries and were rushed to hospital, where they are being kept under close observation.
The remaining children sustained fractures, cuts and bruises, local police confirmed.
Witnesses immediately raised concerns over safety, claiming the ride was dangerously overcrowded and unstable even before it collapsed.
One anonymous onlooker said: “It looked weak even before the accident. No one was checking anything.”
Police have since launched an investigation and confirmed their initial findings point to severe safety lapses.
Police Superintendent Pratipal Singh Mahobia said investigators believe the ride was carrying far too many people when it lost balance.
He added that the quality of materials used to construct the swing would also be examined to determine whether proper safety checks were carried out.
District Collector Neha Meena has ordered a legal, magistrate-led inquiry, with a special team of engineers and police officers working together to uncover the true cause of the collapse.
