Osun State has advanced from 30th to 6th place in the 2nd Edition of the Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking Report, which was released by the Federal Government of Nigeria with assistance from the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP).
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Tuesday, Governor Adeleke hailed this accomplishment as a testament to the state's renewed dedication to climate action and sustainable development.
He also emphasized that this achievement marks a significant milestone in environmental governance.
The report states, “the ranking evaluates how Nigerian states are executing climate policies, enhancing institutional frameworks, and promoting local climate action.
“It serves as a national standard for accountability, innovation, and collaboration aimed at achieving a sustainable future.”
In the 2025 edition, Osun State achieved a total score of 265, demonstrating a remarkable improvement from 30th place in 2024 to 6th overall, and becoming the second-best performing state in the South-West region, following Lagos State.
Governor Adeleke’s administration has been recognized for incorporating climate change, renewable energy, and environmental sustainability as fundamental pillars of governance and economic development in the state.
The statement indicated that “the government has launched several initiatives to enhance local climate response, including increased budget allocations for climate projects, the establishment of a Department of Climate Change and Renewable Energy, and the integration of environmental education into schools.
“Additional actions highlighted include the monitoring of climate-related projects across local governments, regular capacity-building sessions for officials, and improved coordination with national and international agencies.
“The state also received high marks for its online visibility regarding climate change governance, showcasing transparency and increasing public engagement in environmental programs.”
During the unveiling ceremony held in Abuja, the Osun State delegation, led by the Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Adejoorin Mayowa Adeniyi, accepted the award on behalf of the state government.
In his address, Adejoorin dedicated this achievement to the people of Osun State and to Governor Adeleke, praising the governor’s “steadfast commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action.”
Special recognition was also awarded to Professor Chinwe Obuaku-Igwe, the Director-General and Special Envoy of the Governor on Climate Change and Renewable Energy, for her “leadership and strategic coordination in advancing Osun’s progress in national climate governance.”
The statement reaffirmed “the state government’s commitment to promoting renewable energy, circular economy initiatives, and sustainable development programs to create a greener, cleaner, and more resilient Osun for future generations.”
