Former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore, has stated that the party must nominate a strong candidate in preparation for the upcoming poll on August 8, 2026; otherwise, it risks defeat.
Omisore made this statement during consultations in the Osogbo and Olorunda local government areas on Wednesday.
He also urged the party to consider a candidate with prior elective experience for the 2026 gubernatorial race.
Additionally, he disclosed that stakeholders have encouraged him to run for the 2026 Osun governorship election.
He mentioned that these stakeholders have motivated him to challenge the incumbent’s poor governance by entering the race.
Omisore emphasized, “If we do not provide a viable aspirant with the ticket, we will fail and lose. We must look for an aspirant who has previously held an elective position to run for the 2026 gubernatorial race.”
“We cannot leave the party ticket solely to an individual’s discretion to become governor; that would be unfeasible. The governorship of a state should represent a collective agreement among all stakeholders,” he added.
He cautioned that, “The governorship position should not be awarded based on friendship; you should not appoint a friend to a role they cannot fulfill. All of us contesting in this race are like brothers.”
The former APC secretary appealed to party members for their support ahead of the primary scheduled for December 13, 2025.
He stated, “I urge everyone to come out on December 13, 2025, to show your support by selecting me as the party’s candidate for the 2026 gubernatorial race.”
The Consultation Coordinator, Ajibola Famurewa, highlighted the positive reception encountered during visits to various local governments.
Famurewa remarked, “In every local government we have visited, we were met with warmth and acceptance. I am confident that Senator Omisore will emerge as the APC's flag bearer on December 13, 2025.”
