A star-studded lineup has been announced for the latest play adaptation of “Shakespeare in Love”;;!
On May 19, production company ShowNote announced, “Actors Lee Kyu Hyung, Son Woo Hyeon, Lee Sang Yi, Ong Seong Wu, Lee Joo Young, Park Ju Hyun, and Kim Hyang Gi will appear in the play ‘Shakespeare in Love.’”;;
Based on the movie with the same name, “Shakespeare in Love”;; is set in 16th-century London. It tells the story of a young Shakespeare who is in a slump until he meets Viola de Lesseps, a noblewoman, and begins writing again. Their meeting crosses the boundaries of social status, freedom, creativity, and reality, promising both laughter and emotion.
Lee Kyu Hyung, Son Woo Hyeon, Lee Sang Yi, and Ong Seong Wu will play William Shakespeare, a young writer hoping to regain his lost inspiration and talent.
Lee Joo Young, Park Ju Hyun, and Kim Hyang Gi will portray Viola de Lesseps, Shakespeare’s love and the daughter of a wealthy merchant. Viola is a determined woman chasing her dream to become an actressâa role forbidden to women at the timeâshowcasing a wide range of acting skills.
Lee Sang Yi returns to “Shakespeare in Love”;; after starring in the original Ong Seong Wu and Kim Hyang Gi will make their theater debuts, adding to the excitement around the show.
The supporting cast includes Song Young Kyu and Im Chul Hyung as Fennyman, the investor who lent a large sum of money to Hensloweâthe owner of the Rose Theatreâand joins the production to recover their money. Jung Eui Wook and Kim Dae Jong will play Henslowe, the theater owner producing Shakespeare’s play to repay his debt to the Fennyman.
Lee Ho Young and Oh Jung Taek will play Lord Wessex, Viola’s fiancé who seeks her family’s fortune through an arranged marriage. Seo Chang Won will bring energy to the play as Kit Marlowe, a successful playwright and Shakespeare’s friend.
Director Kim Dong Yeon, co-director and choreographer Song Hee Jin, and music director Ji Hyeâall praised for the original productionâare reuniting, returning after two years with an even stronger show.
“Shakespeare in Love”;; will run at the CJ Towol Theater in the Seoul Arts Center from July 5 to September 14.
