The Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Olamide Oladiji, has indicated that the efforts by some disgruntled lawmakers to impeach him are rooted in their issues with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The beleaguered Speaker characterized the impeachment initiative as a misdirected focus, asserting that the Assembly cannot be hindered or diverted from amending and enacting the revised 2025 Appropriation Act.
Oladiji's stance came after he received support from 14 lawmakers in the state, who expressed their confidence in his leadership of the Assembly through a vote.
Previously, twelve of the 26 lawmakers had voted no confidence in the Speaker, alleging gross misconduct and misuse of Assembly funds.
A conflict erupted in the Assembly following a walkout staged by lawmakers in protest against Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s N531 billion supplementary budget. They accused Oladiji of trying to expedite the passage of the bill despite the inadequate performance of the 2025 budget and with less than two months left in the fiscal year.
The Speaker, accompanied by Deputy Speaker Olalade Gbegudu, Chairman of the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, and Olawumi Fayemi-Obayelu (Ilaje 2), stressed that neglecting the amendment—an approach taken by the disgruntled legislators—would hinder Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa's government; therefore, the Assembly must act responsibly.
Emphasizing that the Assembly under his leadership will continue to fulfill its constitutional obligations without unnecessary political maneuvering ahead of the 2027 general elections, Oladiji noted that he has been overseeing the affairs of the Assembly in line with its rules and regulations.
“We believe that if we have any requests or demands from His Excellency or the executive, we should not connect them with our legislative duties, which include the reordering or what we refer to as the supplementary budgets,” he stated.
