Residents of Ayede Ogbese community, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Tuesday barricaded the busy Akure-Owo highway over the killing of a farmer, Ben Daniels, by gunmen suspected to be herders.
The infuriated residents protested against insecurity within the axis, lamenting that the authorities, particularly the state government, have turned deaf ears to the crisis.
The protesters, who blocked the highway for a couple of hours, were armed with placards with various inscriptions such as “They have finished us in Ayede Ogbese”, “We need an army checkpoint here in Ogbese”, “Stop insecurity in our community”, and “We need answers to our questions”.
The residents said they resorted to blocking the highway to draw government attention to their plight.
The victim was said to have been killed while returning from his farm around 9:00 pm Monday.
According to sources, the incident happened a few metres from a police checkpoint in the area.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Abayomi, while confirming the attack, urged residents to refrain from blocking highways or engaging in actions that could disrupt public peace.
The police spokesperson assured that due process would be followed to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for the attack.
