- About the PHC Leadership Challenge Award
The Ogun State Government has secured the runner-up position for the second consecutive time at the 3rd Edition of the Primary Health Care (PHC) Leadership Challenge Award, receiving a total of $400,000.
The State Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, accepted the award on behalf of the state government during a high-profile health event organized by the Nigeria Governor’s Forum in Abuja on Friday. She credited this achievement to Governor Dapo Abiodun's commitment to enhancing the health sector and improving the well-being of residents.
Coker characterized the recognition as a strong endorsement of the administration’s intentional and strategic investments in primary healthcare as a foundation for fostering a healthier and more productive population in Ogun State.
According to her, Governor Abiodun’s reforms in the health sector have emphasized increasing access to quality healthcare services, especially at the grassroots level.
She mentioned that the rehabilitation, upgrading, and equipping of primary healthcare centers across the 20 local government areas have notably enhanced service delivery, particularly in maternal, newborn, and child health.
The Commissioner also stated that the state government has prioritized human capital development in the health sector by recruiting and continuously training health professionals, including doctors, nurses, midwives, and community health workers, to ensure efficient and patient-centered care at the primary level.
She pointed out that the expansion of the Ogun State Health Insurance Scheme has contributed to reducing out-of-pocket expenses and increased access to affordable healthcare services for residents, especially vulnerable and underserved populations. She added that this recognition would motivate the state to deepen ongoing reforms and maintain investments aimed at achieving universal health coverage.
In his comments, the Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Elijah Ogunsola, described the award as evidence of strong leadership, effective coordination, and teamwork within the state’s primary healthcare system.
Ogunsola emphasized that under the current administration, the board has rolled out strategic initiatives aimed at revitalizing primary healthcare centers, improving disease surveillance, strengthening routine immunization, and enhancing community engagement across the state.
The executive secretary reaffirmed the board’s commitment to sustaining the progress made thus far, adding that efforts would be intensified to ensure that every community in Ogun State has access to functional, well-equipped, and adequately staffed primary healthcare facilities.
DAILY POST reports that the PHC Leadership Challenge Award recognizes states that have shown innovation, accountability, and political will in strengthening primary healthcare systems nationwide.
