The Labour Party (LP) in Ogun State has approached Otunba Segun Showunmi, the Convener of the Alternative Movement and a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), encouraging him to run for the 2027 governorship election on its platform.
The Labour Party leadership, headed by the state chairman, Oluwabukola Soyoye, conveyed this message during a visit to Showunmi at his residence in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, on Friday.
Soyoye urged the former spokesperson for ex–Vice President Atiku Abubakar to join the Labour Party and represent it in the upcoming 2027 governorship race, emphasizing that the state requires a new era of governance and that Showunmi aligns with the party’s ideology and vision.
“We want you to come and join us in the Labour Party and serve as our governorship candidate in the next election,” she stated.
In response, Showunmi praised the Labour Party for its ideological consistency and commended former presidential candidate Peter Obi for enhancing the party’s popularity.
He pointed out that the Labour Party’s performance in the last presidential election, where it garnered over six million votes compared to the ruling party’s eight million, illustrates its growing influence and grassroots approach to politics.
Showunmi expressed his eagerness to contribute to the development of Ogun State, highlighting the state’s significant growth potential and the necessity to tackle pressing challenges.
The PDP leader thanked the Labour Party for the opportunity to contest for the governorship and promised to give it serious consideration.
He remarked, “In terms of eligibility for the 2027 governorship, with all due respect, I have examined the landscape, from the strongest candidates to the least, and I believe there is no one more qualified, prepared, or intentional about governance policy than I am among them all.”
“My sole desire has been to hope, work, pray, and strive for a Nigeria that we can proudly pass on to future generations. I have dedicated myself and my limited resources to this cause.”
He also acknowledged the challenges facing Ogun State, particularly the inadequate road infrastructure, while admitting that the current governor has made significant progress in road construction compared to previous administrations.
According to him, the primary shortcoming of the current administration lies in its inability to fully leverage Ogun State’s various growth opportunities, emphasizing that the state needs leadership with a profound understanding of its economic and developmental potential.
“I concede that there are critical issues regarding the current governor’s governance approach. One major concern is that it is quite embarrassing that Ogun State, our beloved state, has become synonymous with poor road conditions, leading to frustration among visitors. However, it should be noted that he has constructed more kilometers of road than his predecessors.”
