The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified its operation at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta was targeted  at internet fraudsters and not the library as widely believed.

The commission said it will arraign 23 suspected internet fraudsters before Justice D. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos on Friday, August 15, 2025.
The suspects were arrested in a sting operation where the EFCC swept up 93 individuals from a hotel at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta..

According to a statement issued by the commission on its official X account, the arrests followed intelligence linking the suspects to offences including impersonation, identity theft, and various forms of internet fraud. Investigators said most of the suspects have been indicted following profiling and interrogation.

The operation took place during a pool party allegedly organised to celebrate the suspects’ illicit activities. The event was initially scheduled for two separate venues but was moved to the OOPL hotel in a bid to avoid law enforcement detection.

EFCC officials stressed that the OOPL facility itself was not targeted, stressing that the operation was aimed solely at the individuals involved. They added that some suspects have already confessed to engaging in online scams.

The remaining suspects from the operation are expected to be arraigned in subsequent batches.
