Rivers United faltered in the title race after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Kano Pillars at the Sani Abacha Stadium on Friday.

Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa and veteran midfielder Rabiu Ali were on target for the Sai Masu Gida in the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL Matchday 35 encounter.

Musa opened the scoring for Usman Abdallah's side just four minutes after the hour mark.

Kano Pillars sealed the victory when Ali converted from the penalty spot 14 minutes from time.

The win boosted the home team's chances of securing a continental ticket.

With Rivers United’s defeat, leaders Remo Stars can now claim a maiden title with a win over Niger Tornadoes in Ikenne on Sunday.
