The Chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum and Governor of Gombe State, Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed concern that insecurity in the North has transformed from a localized issue into a national crisis, thus highlighting the necessity for establishing state police.
Yahaya made this statement during a joint security meeting attended by the 19 state governors, along with distinguished emirs and chiefs from the Northern Region, held at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House in Kaduna.
He emphasized that the establishment of state police is a crucial and effective strategy to tackle the current security challenges facing the nation.
He also pointed out several factors contributing to insecurity in the Northern region, including underdevelopment, illiteracy, weak infrastructure, high unemployment rates, environmental degradation, and poor resource management, among others.
He urged the leaders of the region to take decisive actions to reverse this troubling trend.
Governor Yahaya, however, praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership, which facilitated the release of kidnapped individuals in various parts of the region, while encouraging him to continue his efforts until all victims are freed.
He stated, “the region is committed to working alongside the federal government, security agencies, and local authorities to ensure the safety of lives and property, including within school environments.”
Additionally, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani mentioned that the governors of the region have been developing strategies, such as peer review mechanisms, all aimed at providing effective governance for the people.
He underscored the vital role of traditional institutions in nation-building and fostering communal awareness, urging them to enhance their contributions.
Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, the Sultan of Sokoto, who also serves as the Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, Abubakar Sa’ad, assured the Northern Governors of the unwavering support from traditional institutions in the region.
He also emphasized the importance of the governors ensuring effective service delivery rooted in good governance within their respective states.
