Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President, has criticized the nomination of the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
According to DAILY POST, President Bola Tinubu nominated Yakubu as an ambassador earlier this week.
A number of Nigerians have claimed that the nomination of the former INEC Chairman serves as a reward for the results of the 2023 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Atiku expressed that Tinubu’s decision conveys a misleading message to the current leadership of the electoral commission.
The former vice president stated that Yakubu's nomination implies to the current INEC leadership that compromises and poorly conducted elections result in rewards.
The statement reads: “Let me clarify without any doubt: under no circumstances would I, as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, nominate the immediate past INEC Chairman for an ambassadorial role.
“Such a nomination raises significant concerns. It risks being perceived as a quid pro quo rather than a recognition of merit. It creates poor optics for an administration already facing credibility challenges.
“It sends an incorrect message to the current @inecnigeria leadership; that partisan, compromised, or poorly executed elections may ultimately be rewarded.
“Most importantly, it is morally indefensible for an arbiter at the center of one of the most disputed elections in our history to benefit from its outcome.
“This is not the way to strengthen our democracy or restore public trust in our institutions.”
