The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has alleviated concerns regarding Nigeria potentially becoming a one-party state.

He made these remarks on Wednesday in Abuja while addressing the recent defections of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah and his Bayelsa counterpart, Douye Diri, to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
According to him, the belief that a state can be overtaken by a political party through the defection of its leader is rooted in Nigeria’s military history.
“The citizens will determine their direction, not governors or senators. No party will seize or win any state merely because it has a governor.
“Peter Mbah is a close friend of mine, and I believe that as governor, he must have made his decision based on his own political beliefs and assessments,” he stated.
The former governor of Anambra State also rejected the idea that the South-East could be politically dominated, emphasizing that leadership in a democracy relies on persuasion rather than coercion.
“Regarding the alleged scheme to seize control of the South-East, we are no longer in a military era where people are captured. As a leader, you should strive to do the right things to earn their support. Therefore, I don’t believe anyone is seizing control of anything,” he added.
The politician urged public officials to concentrate on effective governance and policies that genuinely enhance the lives of citizens, cautioning that no degree of political realignment can ensure loyalty from the populace without tangible performance.
