Security has been enhanced in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, and surrounding areas due to the ongoing protests calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

As of the time of this report, there were no signs of protests in the Owerri metropolis. Schools, shops, and government institutions were closed, and there was minimal vehicle movement.

DAILY POST noted that residents gathered in front of their homes to discuss the situation.

The Imo State Police Command had previously assured residents of sufficient security in light of the planned protests, stating that they, in collaboration with other agencies, had deployed security personnel throughout the state to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

A statement from the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, revealed that a joint security Show of Force Operation is currently underway across the state, involving the police, military, DSS, NSCDC, FRSC, and other relevant agencies.

He emphasized that this operation is intended to enhance public confidence, assure residents of their safety, and warn individuals or groups against any actions that could disturb the peace in the state.

Okoye further stated in the press release that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to preserving peace and security throughout the state.

The Commissioner of Police acknowledged that while the Command respects citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly, any actions that could disrupt public order or jeopardize safety will be met with firm and lawful opposition.

He cautioned all criminal elements and troublemakers to refrain from actions that could threaten the peaceful atmosphere of the state.

“The Command appreciates the ongoing support of the people of Imo and urges residents to stay calm, vigilant, and report any suspicious activity to the nearest Police Station or through the Command’s emergency numbers: 08034773600 or 08148024755,” the statement concluded.
