The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced a program to take part in the 'Free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu' large-scale protest set for October 20, 2025.

This announcement was made on Monday by NANS President, Atiku Isah.

The statement indicated that the decision to mobilize students for the protest was made during an executive meeting of NANS, which was chaired by Isah.

NANS emphasized that this mobilization is part of the collective demand for justice, civil rights, and democratic accountability in Nigeria.

It stated, “Following the resolution reached at the recent executive meeting of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), chaired by the National President, Comrade Atiku Isah, the NANS leadership hereby urges all Nigerian students to join the nationwide protest titled ‘Free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’ scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025.

“To ensure effective coordination and participation across the country, students are to gather at designated zonal points before heading to Abuja:

“South West Zone: Students are to assemble in Ekiti State and depart for Abuja on Sunday, October 19, 2025.

“South East Zone: All students are to convene in Enugu.

“South-South Zone: The gathering point is Edo State.

“North East Zone: Students are to assemble in Bauchi State.

“North West Zone: The meeting point is Kano State, and

“North Central Zone: Students will gather in Lokoja, Kogi State.

“For smooth transportation, ten (10) buses will be provided for each zone. Detailed travel plans and additional arrangements will be communicated directly to the respective Students’ Union Government (SUG) Presidents by the national leadership.

“This mobilization is part of the collective call for justice, civil rights, and democratic accountability. As students, we believe that freedom is attained through struggle, and we remain dedicated to peaceful advocacy for what is just.”

The students’ planned protest occurs at a time when government-owned universities in Nigeria are closed due to a strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities that began on Monday.

This development follows former presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore's announcement of a protest march to the Presidential Villa to demand the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since June 2021, when he was rearrested in Kenya.

DAILY POST reports that there have been multiple calls for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release Kanu.
