Those flights still in the air were then forced to declare an emergency likely due to low fuel, Flightradar24 reported.
The flight which stopped on Gatwick’s runway had landed from Palma de Mallorca at 12.12am.
Flights which declared an emergency had been travelling from holiday hotspots including Lanzarote, Rhodes, and Tenerife.
The planes in the air diverted to Stansted and Luton and the BA flight was able to eventually exit the runway.
One flyer who had been due to land at Gatwick from Tenerife instead landed at Stansted.
In a post to social media they said: “Still on the plane to see what’s happening next !! Hoping we can be flown back to Gatwick soon!
“It’s been much longer flight from Tenerife than usual.”
