Human rights advocate Omoyele Sowore has asserted that the salvation of Nigeria depends entirely on responsible leadership rather than foreign intervention.
Sowore made this statement in response to the recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, who claimed that Christianity is facing an “existential threat” in Nigeria.
According to DAILY POST, Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday, labeled Nigeria as a CPC, following allegations of widespread persecution and genocide against Christians.
“Christianity is encountering an existential threat in Nigeria. Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are accountable for this mass slaughter,” he stated.
“I am designating Nigeria as a ‘country of particular concern.’ My administration is prepared to protect our significant Christian population globally,” he added.
In a prompt response via his verified X account on Saturday, Sowore characterized Trump's concern as misguided, cautioning against simplifying Nigeria’s intricate insecurity to merely a religious issue.
He emphasized that the true danger to Nigerians, regardless of their faith, arises from decades of corruption, ineffective governance, and failed leadership.
He remarked, “Nigeria should have long been recognized as a Country of Concern for its ongoing inability to protect its citizens. At every level, the state has failed to safeguard vulnerable Christians, Muslims, and traditional believers alike. Children, women, students, workers, and the elderly have all suffered under the burden of corruption and illegitimate leadership.”
The former presidential candidate expressed his sympathy for the Christian communities in certain northern states who have experienced repeated attacks, but also highlighted that Muslim populations in the north endure the same threat.
“I acknowledge the suffering of the Christian communities in Benue, Plateau, Gombe, and Kaduna, who continue to endure unrelenting assaults, just as the Muslim populations in Katsina, Zamfara, Borno, and Yobe also require protection from ruthless attackers,” he stated.
“Throughout the nation, Nigerians plagued by hunger, poverty, and displacement are crying out for safety and dignity,” he concluded.
