A lawyer, politician, and political affairs analyst, Chima Nnaji, asserts that Nigerian democracy is no longer functioning effectively, emphasizing that greed has overtaken ideology.
Nnaji made this statement on Saturday during an interview on Arise Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST.
He noted that the increasing concentration of power within the ruling party, widespread defection among elected officials, and the weakening of constitutional safeguards indicate a system that has ceased to serve the people it was intended to protect.
“I don’t believe democracy is functioning anymore. Many of these issues are orchestrated; they are induced.
“When a system fails to deliver on its promises or objectives, it has effectively become useless,” he stated.
The lawyer also claimed that political figures are exploiting constitutional provisions to justify defections.
The politician highlighted that lawmakers who leave the parties they were elected under often evade penalties by creating artificial divisions within their former parties.
Is Nigerian democracy still effective?
According to Nnaji, the system has stopped fulfilling its intended purpose, indicating a failure in democratic processes.
What are the signs of a failing democracy in Nigeria?
Nnaji points to the rising concentration of power, the defection of elected officials, and the weakening of constitutional protections as clear indicators of a failing democracy.
