Nigerians are facing higher costs for premium motor spirit, commonly referred to as petrol, as prices surged at various filling stations in the capital city, Abuja, on Monday.
Retail outlets of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited in Abuja, including Empire, AA Rano, and Shema filling stations, have raised their fuel prices to between N905 and N945 per litre as of Monday, October 6, 2025.
NNPCL fuel stations in Wuse Zone 6 (Berger), Wuse Zone 4, AA Rano, Shema along Kubwa Expressway, and Empire Energy have all adjusted their petrol prices accordingly.
According to DAILY POST, Empire Filling Station in Gwarimpa is selling petrol at the highest price of N945 per litre.
Meanwhile, other filling stations in the capital, such as MRS, Emedeb, Raniol, and Eterna, are dispensing petrol at prices between N885 and N910 per litre.
Reason for Fuel Hike
In response to the situation, the president and spokesperson of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Abubakar Maigandi and Chinedu Ukadike, respectively, attributed the increase to disruptions caused by the PENGASSAN strike.
Maigandi mentioned that the price hike might be linked to supply disruptions.
However, he noted that members who receive petrol from Dangote Refinery are selling the product between N885 and N895 per litre.
“Our members are still selling between N885 and N895 per litre. The conflict between Dangote and PENGASSAN may have led to the recent fuel price increase due to panic buying and an artificial scarcity of the product.
“I assure you that prices will decrease and return to normal in the coming days,” he told DAILY.
Earlier, Ukadike informed DAILY POST that last week’s PENGASSAN strike caused an artificial scarcity in Lagos and Abuja.
He expressed optimism that the availability of petrol products across the country would alleviate the situation.
Fuel Depot Price Increases
According to Ukadike, depot prices for petrol products have seen a slight increase, now at N844 per litre at Dangote Refinery, with Raniol and Aiteo at N845, and NIPCO at N850 in Lagos State.
DAILY POST reports that these changes follow the resolution of the strike declared by PENGASSAN against Dangote Refinery due to widespread layoffs of Nigerian workers.
The strike lasted for two days before the Federal Government intervened.
Dangote Refinery and PENGASSAN reached an agreement, leading to the suspension of the strike.
On Monday, Dangote Refinery and others expressed their support in halting PENGASSAN’s strike action.
Nigeria Bigger than PENGASSAN
In a related matter, Vice President Kasim Shettima remarked on Monday during the 31st Nigerian Economic Summit (NES31) that the nation is larger than the union.
In response, PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo stated that the country is indeed bigger than both Dangote Refinery and the presidency.
