The Federal Government has approved a $1 billion project to modernize ports in Lagos, representing a crucial move in its effort to enhance Nigeria’s maritime infrastructure and increase efficiency at seaports.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, made this announcement during the 2025 Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Nigeria Conference, held in Lagos under the theme “Enhancing Logistics and Transport for a Sustainable Blue Economy in Nigeria.”
Represented by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Oyetola stated that the Lagos Port Modernisation Project is part of a larger agenda to reposition Nigeria’s maritime sector for global competitiveness through upgraded infrastructure, enhanced cargo handling, and the implementation of smart technology.
“We are collaborating closely with all stakeholders to create a paperless, technology-driven port environment that enhances efficiency, reduces turnaround time, and mitigates corruption,” he remarked.
According to the Minister, the $1 billion upgrade of the Lagos port will serve as a model for similar projects across the country, as the government has already initiated the procurement process for port modernization efforts beyond Lagos to ensure balanced development across all maritime corridors.
Oyetola stressed that these reforms demonstrate the Federal Government’s dedication to strengthening logistics performance, enhancing competitiveness, and positioning Nigeria as a premier maritime trade and investment hub in West Africa.
He also pointed out the success of the Deep Blue Project, which has enabled the country to achieve a record of zero piracy incidents over the past three years, significantly improving maritime security and boosting investor confidence.
“Since the establishment of the Ministry, we have concentrated on reform and institutional strengthening. Through initiatives like the Deep Blue Project, we are protecting our maritime domain, attracting investment, and lowering the cost of doing business,” Oyetola concluded.
