The Nigerian Army has refuted claims that bandits assaulted its troops in Obanla, Kwara State, and absconded with firearms and ammunition.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Lieutenant Colonel Polycarp Okoye, Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 2 Division, characterized the report as inaccurate and misleading.

He asserted that the story, which claimed that troops were overwhelmed and six General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs) along with over 30,000 rounds of ammunition were stolen, was a fabrication intended to mislead the public and lower troop morale.

“At no point were Army positions overrun, nor was any stockpile of weapons or ammunition lost to criminal elements,” Okoye clarified. “This publication is a calculated effort to instill fear and undermine the morale of our dedicated troops.”

Okoye elaborated that soldiers from the 148 Battalion (Rear) have consistently achieved significant operational successes in clearance operations throughout Kogi and Kwara States.

He pointed out that in a recent operation, troops established a robust blocking position along the Kwara–Ekiti border, where they neutralized two armed bandits and seized two brand-new AK-47 rifles.

The Army urged Nigerians to dismiss the false report and continue to support security agencies by providing valuable information.

“The Nigerian Army remains dedicated to eradicating all forms of criminality across the nation,” Okoye stated.

“We will maintain the momentum of operations until every criminal network in Kogi, Kwara, and neighboring states is dismantled.”
