Their friendship began when she helped form One Direction 16 years ago.
They developed their bond further during the talent contest which was filmed months prior to his passing.
Nicole revealed that she learned of his death just before she was set to perform in Sunset Boulevard.
In an interview with The Times , Nicole expressed: “I truly adored Liam. He had such a kind heart.
“I hardly knew him when I put One Direction together. I just saw these talented boys and thought, ‘I’m coming out of a girl group — I understand the strength of a group.’”
Reflecting on their text exchange on the day of his death, she said: “I knew he was in Argentina. It was just casual chit-chat and quite light-hearted.”
Upon hearing the news of his passing, Nicole stated: “The show must go on.”
Nonetheless, she honored her friend in a special way every night: “From that moment on, I dedicated a small part of the show to Liam each night.
“Just a brief moment that always reminded me of him.”
Andrew Lloyd Webber, who composed the music for the Broadway musical Sunset Boulevard, told Billboard : “I suppose something that hasn’t been mentioned, and I should say, is that she indeed mentored Liam, right from his time in One Direction.
“On the Wednesday when he passed, she was still texting him that day.
“The fact that she performed at all is remarkable. She is an incredibly talented woman.
“She is undeniably one of the finest performers I’ve ever collaborated with.”
This follows Nicole sharing AI-generated images of herself with the late star, describing the images as “a blessing and a curse.”

One Direction's members were among the first to share their reactions, posting a photo of Liam with the caption ‘Just a boy…’ accompanied by a broken heart emoji.
Britain’s Got Talent judge Amanda Holden shared a picture of the pair together, expressing: “Such a devastating tragedy.
“Sending love to his family and all those who cherished him.”
X Factor star conveyed his devastation, stating he was “lost for words.”
He posted on social media: “Liam shared the same passions and dreams as I did, so learning of his untimely passing is incredibly painful. I’m truly heartbroken for his family and, of course, his son Bear who has lost a father x.”
Another friend said he was “very saddened” and reminded his followers on X: “Life is precious, kids. You only get one chance, so take it easy.”
