NEWCASTLE welcomes Jose Mourinho’s Benfica to St James’ Park for Tuesday’s Champions League match.

Newcastle vs Benfica Preview

Newcastle returns to Champions League action on Tuesday night, hoping that St James’ Park can work its magic against Jose Mourinho’s Benfica.

The Toon has had a somewhat inconsistent start to the 2025-26 season, with four wins, four losses, and three draws from their first 11 matches across all competitions.

Their recent momentum, which included consecutive victories over Union Saint-Gilloise and Nottingham Forest, was halted at the weekend as they lost 2-1 to Brighton, with Danny Welbeck scoring twice either side of half-time.

This result leaves Eddie Howe’s side still searching for their first away league win, having scored only once in those matches.

However, on home ground, the Magpies have looked more formidable. They have secured three wins in their last five games at St James’ Park, with narrow losses to Liverpool, Arsenal, and Barcelona not raising major concerns.

A victory over Benfica would mark Newcastle's first back-to-back Champions League wins since February 2003, and the statistics suggest this is a viable possibility.

The Portuguese giants have lost their last four matches in the competition and have only one win in their last nine away games against English teams.

Additionally, Mourinho doesn't boast a strong record on Tyneside, with only three wins in 12 visits (D4 L5) and just one victory in his last seven encounters (D3 L3).

Goals?

Don’t expect a high-scoring affair when Jose Mourinho’s Benfica visits on Tuesday night. Instead, we're backing under 1.5 goals at 16/5 with William Hill.

Benfica has participated in several low-scoring matches on the road this season, with only two of their nine away games seeing over 2.5 goals. This trend is unlikely to change against Premier League opposition.

Indeed, their last two significant away challenges—against Chelsea and Porto—saw only one goal scored across 180 minutes.

Newcastle hasn’t been prolific in front of goal either. Aside from decisive wins against USG and Bradford, three of their first eight Premier League matches ended in 0-0 draws, and they have scored just once away from home all season.

Moreover, their expected goals (xG) from open play stands at 5.73, ranking as the eighth-lowest in the league.

Carded

With goals expected to be scarce on Tuesday night, we’re focusing on the card market, and Benfica right-back Amar Dedic looks like a solid bet.

The Bosnia international is 10/3 with William Hill to receive a card, and there are plenty of reasons to support this.

Dedic, 23, has already accumulated four yellow cards in 15 appearances this season, with two of those in his last four matches for Benfica.

He is set to face a significant challenge under the lights at St James’ Park, likely matching up against Anthony Gordon, who has drawn more fouls than any other Newcastle player this season except for Bruno Guimaraes.
