A win over PSV tonight keeps Newcastle in the hunt for a top eight Champions League finish heading into the final matchday next week.

The look on Eddie Howe’s face on Sunday suggested there’s a real frustration at Newcastle at the minute.

A last-minute winner against Leeds was followed by a penalty shoot-out win over Bournemouth in the FA Cup a couple of days later.

But they struggled in those games at home and have since lost 2-0 to Man City before creating virtually nothing in a 0-0 draw at Wolves, who themselves were miles off it.

Howe isn’t getting anywhere near enough from three of his four wingers, with only Harvey Barnes seemingly capable of producing, while he has a dilemma up top in choosing between Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

Newcastle are 12th but just two points off eighth placed Atletico Madrid in the chase for a top eight spot.

Now they welcome a PSV side who’ve won six games on the spin and need a result to keep themselves in the hunt for a top-24 spot as they sit in 21st spot.

Their last European fixture saw them lose 3-2 to the aforementioned Atletico at home but prior to that had thumped Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield during the Reds’ dire spell.

As mentioned, Harvey Barnes is the main attacking threat for Newcastle at present and no reason why that again won’t be the case here.

He really needs to play on the left with Anthony Gordon continuing to deliver little and Newcastle’s best chance of success is doing exactly that.
