ANTHONY GORDON equalled Alan Shearer’s club record as he went from Prem chump to Newcastle’s king of Europe.

The winger has gone over a year without a goal from open play in the top-flight, but he cannot stop scoring in the Champions League.

He took his tally to six in the competition to help Toon brush aside PSV – equalling legend Shearer’s club record haul for a single season back in 2002-03.

Yoane Wissa needed just eight minutes to break the deadlock before teeing up Gordon to effectively seal it before the break.

Not to be outdone, fellow winger Harvey Barnes added the third for his 12th of the season and suddenly Eddie Howe’s men were firing on all cylinders again.

And it was a result that confirmed at least a play-off spot for the Mags. But victory at Paris Saint-Germain next week will see them overtake the holders to clinch a top eight finish and march straight into the Round of 16.

Gordon was not the only one badly in need of a goal. After Sunday’s drab stalemate at Wolves, £69m Nick Woltemade paid the price for registering a 12th blank from his last 13 games as Wissa replaced him in the only change from Molineux.

Though the DR Congo star has hardly been setting the world alight either. He had only hit the net twice in Black and White so far since his £50m arrival from Brentford.

But on his first ever start in the Champions League, he wasted little time in getting off the mark as PSV produced their first gift of the night.

Goalkeeper Matej Kovar cleared it straight to Bruno Guimaraes, up against his old Lyon boss Peter Bosz, 45 yards out. He held off a weak challenge to play in Joelinton to his left.

His fellow Brazilian charged forward before squaring through two defenders for Wissa to slot home.

And after getting his name on the scoresheet, the forward then turned provider for the second after another PSV howler.

Yarek Gasiorowski’s terrible touch back to goal allowed him to slide in and play it to the unmarked Gordon on his left, and he took a touch before tapping into the empty net.

Given their recent struggles domestically, the prospect of taking on the Dutch league leaders was a huge cause of concern for the Toon Army.

They are on a stunning 15-game Eredivisie away winning run and were yet to taste defeat in Europe, having drawn at Leverkusen and Olympiacos before thumping Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield in November.

Bosz had promised to come and attack here too – but the best they could muster was a tame effort straight at Nick Pope.

It was an easy night for the Toon stopper, and the visitors made it even easier as they handed Newcastle the third just after the hour mark.

Captain Jerdy Schouten, who could not be bothered to track Gordon for the second, headed back towards his own goal straight into Barnes’ path.

The 28-year-old took a heavy first touch, but Gasiorowski’s sloppy defending allowed him to recover, skip past him into the box and drill home left-footed.

Now three up and cruising, Toon were in no mood to take their foot off the gas, especially knowing a 4-0 victory would mean a draw at Parc des Princes would do for a top eight spot.

Woltemade, on for Wissa, came close with a header before fellow sub Anthony Elanga fizzed one over.

The fourth was not to be – but just maybe the Mags and Gordon are saving a bit more magic for the French capital.

It was 2-0 before the half time interval as Anthony Gordon poked home from Wissa’s pass after pouncing on some woeful PSV defending.

And Eddie Howe’s men grabbed their third after the break as Harvey Barnes scored a fantastic solo goal – his fifth in the competition this season.

It was a dominant display from the Premier League outfit and means they are now seventh in the Champions League standings with one game to go – keeping them in the top eight on goal difference.
